Satan Hates The Wall Street Journal

Satan Hates You walks a fine line between campy laughs and sincere appreciation"
- Steve Dollar, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Steve Dollar talks to James Felix McKenney & Angus Scrimm about SATAN HATES YOU, opening Friday at reRun in Brooklyn. Read it here atThe Wall Street Journal.

SATAN HATES YOU - The Fangoria Review

"SATAN HATES YOU is an unusual little picture combining gory excess, issues of faith, black humor and low-budget New York City grit."
- Michael Gingold, FANGORIA

SATAN HATES YOU is now playing for one week only at the reRun Gastropub in NYC!

The NY Times Hates Satan!

Perhaps the Devil made her do it, but Jeannette Catsoulis of the New York Times was not amused by SATAN HATES YOU.

"Satan may not hate us, but the film’s writer and director,
James Felix McKenney, surely does."
- Jeannette Catsoulis, THE NEW YORK TIMES

The Village Voice and Slant didn't feel particularly blessed by the film either:

"Conceptually, the film's a hoot: The very idea of having Scrimm, famous for playing a mute extraterrestial body snatcher in the PHANTASM movies, star as an angelic voice of salvation, is perversely perfect."
- Simon Abrams, THE VILLAGE VOICE

"Satan Hates You is self-conscious trash with occasional bite."
- Chuck Bowen, SLANT

May the Lord forgive them.

SATAN in Missouri this December

SATAN HATES YOU will screen at Columbia, Missouri's Rag Tag Cinema on December 12 as part of  screenwriter and film programmer Simon Barrett's "Lost Gems" series.
Here's what Simon had to say about our film on his personal blog:

"In a huge, bizarre coup for the Lost Gems series, I am presenting the Missouri premiere of the 2010 film SATAN HATES YOU, which has previously only screened at a handful of film festivals worldwide. And what better way to prepare for the holidays than with an amazing, pitch perfect homage to Christian scare films? What’s that, you ask? What’s a Christian scare film? Well, like any viewer of IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? or any visitor of a fundamentalist Christian church’s “hell house” knows, Christian scare films are gory, salacious horror films with a sanctimonious message that makes all that horror okay. Like a Jack Chick tract come bloodily to life, and featuring genre legends Larry Fessenden, Debbie Rochon and Angus Scrimm in supporting roles, James Felix McKenney’s SATAN HATES YOU brilliantly bridges the gap between parody and homage. See it with your family and enjoy a spirited debate on the drive home!

Please note: There is absolutely no irony in my above synopsis of SATAN HATES YOU. This self-aware masterpiece is legitimately one of my favorite films of 2010, and with no release date currently scheduled, this is a rare opportunity to see an enormously entertaining and thoroughly unique independent film before anyone else has even heard of it. In fact, if enough of you don’t turn out for this screening, I will punish you by just programming SUBURBAN SASQUATCH every weekend in 2011 until the lack of Sunday night attendance drives both Uprise and Ragtag out of business. I’ll do it, too. And then when you’re spending your next free Sunday drinking sadly in the Stadium 14 parking lot after an evening screening of SHREK 6, you’ll be sorry."

More on Simon Barrett's Lost Gems can be found at the Rag Tag website.

Burning Inside: "A Deeply Penetrating Surreal Nightmare"

All Things Horror's Chris Hallock raves about BURNING INSIDE!

"Burning Inside is an intense, often mesmerizing horror film, and one of the few films that feels lifted straight from the era of 70's midnight movies. Clearly a lot of time and love was put into Burning Inside, and for that it deserves an audience.  If you can devote yourself to the two hour running time, you will be rewarded with a film that you just can't shake once you arrive at the final frame."

Fangoria presents SATAN HATES YOU in Atlanta

FANGORIA PRESENTS: SATAN HATES YOU
at the BURIED ALIVE FILM FEST

(Written/Directed by James Felix McKenney. 94 mins)

Starring: Don Wood, Christine Spencer, Angus Scrimm, Reggie Bannister, Larry Fessenden. With Michael Berryman and Debbie Rochon.

Sex, drugs, rock n roll, abortion, gay-bashing – the Devil made me do it!!! SATAN HATES YOU is a funny/creepy pastiche of classic Christian “cautionary” films like Ron Ormond’s IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU… Marc (Wood) is a homicidal maniac driven by demons; Wendy is a fast and loose rock ‘n’ roll, drug-snorting slut who thinks nothing of the consequences of her actions. Their paths will cross, but will it be on the road to salvation or the highway to Hell?
“Weird and wild…a subversive work of art.” – Shock Cinema magazine.

"Satan Hates You falls into that wonderful spot of unclassifiable horror filmmaking…If there was ever a movie that fits into the vintage mould of coveted 70’s and 80’s horror films, Satan Hates You fills it without really trying too hard...The acting is all around pretty stellar, and no doubt partially because the dialogue is strong and natural... If you can’t tell, I’m pretty excited about Satan Hates You"
